In Istanbul, on August 18, members of the Gaza Tribunal stood before journalists with a message that cut through diplomatic silence:
“It’s time to act.”
The Tribunal, made up of prominent scholars, jurists, and human rights defenders, urged the United Nations to authorize an armed international intervention under its mandate to halt what they describe as the “most lethal phase” of Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip — a campaign that has left tens of thousands of Palestinians dead and millions displaced.
From Istanbul, American jurist Richard Falk — former UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Palestine — spoke with both sorrow and urgency.
He called on world governments to bypass the gridlock of the UN Security Council, where the United States continues to shield Israel with its veto, and instead bring the issue directly before the UN General Assembly.
“There are lawful paths to do this,” Falk explained, pointing to the ‘Uniting for Peace’ resolution of 1950 and the ‘Responsibility to Protect’ (R2P) doctrine adopted in 2005. Both, he said, give the world a moral and legal framework to intervene when genocide and Crimes Against Humanity unfold in plain sight.
But Falk didn’t speak in abstractions. His voice carried something heavier — the weight of watching history repeat itself.
“Failing to act now,” he warned, “would mark a historic collapse of humanity itself.”
According to the Gaza Tribunal, the world is witnessing a genocide in real time — a slow, televised annihilation that echoes the indifference once shown to Rwanda and Srebrenica.
Falk did not hold back in assigning responsibility.
He accused Western democracies of complicity, arguing that their political hesitation and continued arms sales amount to participation in Israel’s crimes.
“Public outrage means nothing if it doesn’t lead to real action,” he said. “We need embargoes, sanctions, and movements that match the moral courage of the anti-apartheid struggle.”
He also condemned the suppression of critical voices — from sanctions imposed on human rights rapporteurs to the targeted killings of journalists like Anas al-Sharif and several Al Jazeera staff members on August 10.
“Part of the Tribunal’s work,” Falk added, “is to strengthen the voice of truth against the machinery of silence.”
This theme of resistance — of truth standing up to brutality — has run through every Eyewitness Testimony collected by the Tribunal since its founding in 2024.

The Tribunal’s emergency declaration, titled “It’s Time to ACT”, is set to be presented to the UN General Assembly this September.
It calls for a multinational peacekeeping force to enter Gaza under UN authority until Israel withdraws, lifts its blockade, and allows unhindered humanitarian access.
A final session of the Tribunal will take place in Istanbul in October, where a moral verdict — based on months of hearings, Gaza Tribunal Reports, and testimonies — will be formally delivered.
The Tribunal, which has already held sessions in London and Sarajevo, has accused Israel of Genocide, War Crimes, and apartheid. Its members include academics, lawyers, and activists who describe the body as a “people’s court of conscience” — a response to the paralysis of formal international institutions.
Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation inside Gaza continues to deteriorate at a staggering pace.
Since October 2023, more than 62,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to human rights monitors and on-the-ground reports. Entire neighborhoods lie in ruins. The few remaining hospitals operate without electricity. Food and water have become privileges of luck, not rights.
In refugee camps like Nuseirat, families wait in long, silent lines for small portions of cooked meals.
Mothers whisper prayers over their children as the sound of drones hums above.
These are not just statistics — they are the living, breathing weight of what the world has failed to stop.
Every shattered building, every buried family is now part of the Digital Evidence Archive that will one day stand in court.
From Civilian Impact Reports to War Crimes Documentation, the record grows — undeniable, human, and raw.
“The law means nothing without enforcement,” Falk said plainly.
“And when power decides who deserves protection, law becomes an instrument of injustice.”
The Tribunal’s message is simple but fierce: the time for statements has passed.
What remains is moral courage — the kind that acts, not just speaks.
The call for intervention is not just about International Justice; it’s about restoring meaning to the word justice itself.
As Falk reminded those listening, “If we believe in law, it must protect those with no power.”
The Gaza Tribunal’s mission goes beyond political borders. It’s an act of remembrance, documentation, and resistance.

What began as a gathering of conscience in 2024 has become a mirror reflecting the world’s moral test.
